Girls Team Tryouts
Information and Commonly Asked Questions
Who can try out?
Anyone can try out, as long as your gymnast is age 6+ or is turning 6 years old by September 1st, 2026.
What will be evaluated?
Some of the skills that we will evaluate are:
Flexibility
Basic skills on all four events: Bars, Beam, Vault, Floor
These will all be relative to age and previous experience. If your gymnast has been in our Rec program, they have experience with these skills.
How do I know if my gymnast is ready?
You can always ask your rec coach if they think she is ready based on the skills they have seen in class. But here are some basic things to think about:
Does your gymnast LOVE coming to gymnastics?
Does she want to do it more than 1 or 2 days a week?
Is she enthusiastic and energetic about coming to class?
Are you, as a parent, ready for a little bit bigger commitment to the sport?
Tryouts for the 2026 season will be held on:
Sunday, January 11th
1:00 PM - 3:30 PM
What is Pre-Team or Training Team?
The terms "pre-team" and "training team" are the same thing. This is Midwest's group of younger gymnasts who are training mentally and physically in preparation for acceptance on Midwest's competitive teams.
Do they compete?
No. The training teams will not be competing as their classes are solely focused on preparation.
How many hours are a week do the Teams practice?
Training Team - TBD
DP: Level 3 - 9 hours weekly, 3 days a week
How and when do I know what team I am asked to join?
It is the intent to send notice to families and gymnasts by the next business week after tryouts.
In the event of receiving a Team invitation, you will have a deadline (to be distributed) to accept or decline. If your gymnast is currently enrolled in a Midwest Gymnastics Winter Session Class, you will receive instructions as to the mechanics of switching to the Team Program.
When does the Team commitment start?
For the 2026 season, Team practice will start on Monday, February 2nd.
What is a competitive season?
DP L3 & 4 competition is Fall 26, culminating in a Minnesota State Championships in December.
Why do Team gymnastics?
Gymnastics fuels the brain and body for learning.

Developing and mastering competitive skills.
Gymnasts must learn work ethics. Gymnastic skills take time and repetition to master. Gymnasts must condition physically and mentally to prepare for the proper execution of skills.
